From Renting to Homeownership: Cecile & Hugo’s First Home Story

Buying your first home can feel overwhelming. Every inspection item sounds scary, every repair feels expensive, and it’s easy to wonder if you’re making the right decision. That’s exactly where Cecile and Hugo found themselves when we started looking for their first home.
They were hoping to find a property that felt like home today but also offered room to grow in the future. After exploring different options, we found an updated Craftsman in Montclair that checked all the boxes: character, charm, a great layout, and even the potential to add an ADU down the road.
Like many first-time buyers, the excitement quickly mixed with anxiety once we entered the inspection period. The reports revealed a handful of issues that raised concerns and left them wondering whether they should move forward. This is where having the right team matters. We brought in a trusted home inspector who took the time to thoroughly explain what was normal for a home of this age, what needed immediate attention, and what could simply be monitored over time. Instead of focusing on worst-case scenarios, we focused on facts, solutions, and helping Cecile and Hugo understand exactly what they were buying. Armed with that information, we negotiated repairs and credits from the seller, helping address key concerns while protecting our clients’ interests. More importantly, Cecile and Hugo were able to move forward feeling informed and confident, not pressured.
One of the biggest misconceptions about buying a home is that the goal is to find a “perfect” house. The reality is that every home has imperfections. The goal is to understand those imperfections, evaluate the risks, and make an informed decision about whether the home is the right fit for your lifestyle and long-term goals.
For Cecile and Hugo, the answer was yes. Today, they’re settling into their first home, a beautiful updated Craftsman with room to create memories, build equity, and potentially add an ADU in the future.
Helping first-time buyers navigate the emotional side of homeownership is one of my favorite parts of this job. It’s not just about finding the right house; it’s about giving people the knowledge and confidence to take the next step. Congratulations, Cecile and Hugo! I can’t wait to see what you do with your new home.
