Highland Park Neighborhood Report

One of L.A.'s first subdivisions established in the late 1800's with many unique and historic homes, the Highland Park neighborhood is a center for creativity, leisure, art and unique, eclectic small business commerce. Architecture in the area include beautiful Victorians and Craftsman homes, with more than 50 structures designated as historic cultural monuments by the Los Angeles’ Cultural Heritage Commission.

Some call it one of L.A.'s first "suburbs", others say it's one of the "hippest" neighborhoods in America. Either way, we love Highland Park and it is home to us! Even though we are living in one of the biggest cities in the U.S., this neighborhood feels like a small town. We see the same neighbors when we go to the coffee shop, when we go to grab a loaf of fresh bread, and it feels like such a vibrant and connected community. There are tons of mom-and-pop stores, small businesses and entrepreneurs who are opening up in the neighborhood that make it feel like a truly unique, creative and diverse little slice of L.A. It's not pretentious; it’s friendly people are happy to say "hi" and tell you about their stories.

Check out some of the awesome new local businesses we scoped out on Figueroa Street, one of the main streets in the neighborhood and home to some really unique stores, coffee shops, restaurants, bars & speakeasys, and music venues.

Luca - Essential Living

5727 N Figueroa St, Los Angeles, CA 90042

We love that it’s an option to walk in a neighborhood to a store where you can get sustainable, non-toxic products that you can trust to clean your home or to use on your skin. You can tell that the owners have a passion and care about what they do which is something we deeply appreciate and respect as business owners ourselves. Luca sells "good * clean * gentle" products including essential oils and supplements, household supplies, pet supplies, skin and personal care. Check them out and support them!

Alebrije Folk Art

This family run, mobile business specializes in handmade gifts and art from Oaxaca, Mexico. We had the opportunity to talk with this sweet father and his sons, who told us about how he is teaching his sons about starting their own businesses and how to become an entrepreneur.

The owner invited us to go sit up on top of his truck and enjoy the view of life on Figueroa, in one of the most vibrant neighborhoods of Los Angeles. We loved that we could see a little slice of Oaxaca from the creative and artistic items he is selling, which is the beauty of living in a place that attracts cultures and families from all around the world.

Owl Bureau

5634 N Figueroa St., Los Angeles, CA 90042.

Owl Bureau was once a pharmacy (they kept the original sign) and now is a bookstore specializing in a unique, curated selection of hardcover books about art and culture, as well as headquarters to an art agency. What a cool office and business concept! Anything that encourages us to get away from our electronic devices, read actual books, be around our neighbors and experience life is so valuable, and this bookstore has become a neighborhood staple.
